Engagement ring diamond subsititue?
Im planning on proposing to my girlfriend soon but shes very opposed to a real diamond ring due to the way they're mined or something. In trying to think of an alternative, I came up with a few ideas: synthetic man made diamond, but they're really expensive, or white topaz or white sapphire. If I bought her a white topaz or sapphire would it still sparkle like a diamond?
And by the way, will a white sapphire or topaz dull over time? Because I bought her an amythest promise ring a few years ago, it was only like 200, but it's dull now and has no sparkle to it at all, and i know thats what she really wants
I would go with a sapphire. You can choose white, but they also come in pretty much every colour. My ring is a blue-green sapphire. If it is not heat-treated the colour shouldn't change over time. Usually they just heat treat the dark blue ones to make them look bluer, but sometimes the other colours are heat treated. Just check with your jeweller.
A sapphire is a better choice than a topaz because it is much harder. A sapphire is a nine compared to a diamond's ten, and a topaz is an 8. BUT, it is not a linear scale meaning that diamond is MUCH harder than sapphire, and sapphire is MUCH harder than topaz. http://geology.about.com/library/bl/blmohsscale.htm
Sapphires are also much more sparkly than topaz (usually) but it really it depends on how they're cut. A white sapphire ring would be beautiful.
