Kazuri Necklace

Hey! Unitarian Universalists!?

Just a survey for UUs, particularly high school youths.

What was the most recent social action project you did or are doing? Tell me about it.

My high school group and I get beautiful glazed clay Kazuri beads made by African women trying to support their families. We get the flawed ones that are stuck together or chipped, so we get them for free. We make them into beautiful Amani bracelets and necklaces and keychains, sell them for $5 per bead used, they sell like wildfire, and all the money goes straight back to the women who made the beads in the first place.

That's a really neat project. The most recent one I participated in (I'm not in high school, but I am a UU), was to collect sweat shirts & pants for the Albuquerque Veteran's Integration Center. Depending on who you ask, we have between 660 and 7000 homeless vets here, and it's not as warm as most people think. We're a mile high and desert so it gets pretty cold.

Personally, I also work in an immigrant school with 100% free lunch and deplorable conditions. A friend & I help non-English-speaking citizens get registered & vote through the school.
