Creative Mommies! I need some ideas...?

I am starting to think about my son's 1st birthday party. It is in december so I was going to do a Winter Fun party. It will be mostly adults and a few kids.

I am going to make a snowman cake, and do pin the nose on the snowman, hot chocolate, and blue/silver ballons.

Anyone have any good ideas for decorations? foods? snacks? games? anything?
I belong to Lukas, I have about 7-9 older kids, from 7-9 years old.

The best thing for a first birthday is - keep it simple!

The reasons being A) your son won't remember it B) too many people (especially if there are many he doesn't know) will just overwhelm him and C) too much chaos and excitement will again overwhelm him and he'll be tired and stressed.

The cake sounds great... and a photo of it will be great for photo album/scrapbook. Otherwise, some quiet background music (nursery rhymes) a few balloons and close friends/family will be fine.

Games aren't really necessary either... unless you have lots of older children. I've been to several first birthday parties since my son was born and they ALL consisted of parents sitting around chatting with the babies playing on the floor and eating nibbles.

Foodwise... basic sandwiches, breadsticks, gerber/organix puffs, fruit... as it gets closer and you have to buy the food, you should have a pretty good idea of the kind of thing your son eats and any little friends his age! Even pizza goes down well with 1 year olds and can be healthy, esp if homemade.

Balloons look good, but they can pop when babies try to pull up to stand with them or try and chew them. They're also a choking hazard if they pop and are swallowed (very possible with little ones)... so I personally would keep them out of reach. That said, my friend had balloons at her daughter's first birthday party in July and the babies loved them... it wasn't until afterwards her daughter managed to pop several.

Pin the nose on the snowman again would work well for older kids, but NOT 1 year olds... it would also be tricky for most 2 year olds. Consider your guest's age (not sure what this is).

But basically, keep the excitement and thrills for his future birthdays when he'll be able to participate! For now, he'll be crawling/walking around eating and playing, quite oblivious to the fact it's his birthday... a houseful of strangers and noise isn't doing him any favours on his special day.
